Fade to Black and A Lesson In Contrast

Monday March 21,2016

Black on black and all black with a punch of white. That was the idea behind this photo story which was shot on location at the newly revamped Del Amo Fashion Mall in Torrance, CA. From my early days in retail working the makeup artistry circuit all black as a uniform was a common practice instilled in me. It soon became my go-to as my day to day wardrobe outfit as well, it was easy to pair because there was no matching of patterns or colors and texture was no obstacle either, in fact it was a welcome accessory adding that one needed element. Today I took an unexpected mash-up of black tuxedo pants and a ruffled crepe blouse; a usual nod to a night time or evening look and downplayed it by accompanying it with patent leather Birkenstock Gizeh sandals in one ensemble and Rihanna for  Puma Fenty  sneakers in another. At first I thought this calls for a serious pump or open toed stiletto for sure but I linked the combos and loved what I got! Either way the look was still polished and classy, yet easy fun.

Here, an unlikely pairing with my Birkenstock Gizeh sandals but it works. Take a cue from the patent leather which takes it up a notch. Most often you think of Birk’s with flowey skirts and dresses or denim cut-offs and a fringed shawl or some other low key collaboration but look around and if you  let style mavens have their say, anything goes. Want more proof? Read Popsugar here and Who What Wear here.

There’s that Love Moschino bag again. And I added some vintage inspiration with a jacket from my mothers closet. It must be at least 50 years old but I simply adore the bead work and the condition is near mint. Not only is this jacket a perfect styling partner to my outfit because it’s black and the compliment of it’s intricate adorning of beads but as you can probably imagine, wearing it gives me a sense of comfort knowing that it once belonged to my mother, who at one time gave it her own personality. I also got some added polish and a pop of color from NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in cult fave shade Cruella.

Here I worked up the same peplum blouse by Who What Wear for Target Collection with satin piped pants from H&M and accented them with the bright surprise of the white sneakers. I love the fresh crispness of white, in this case it adds a sporty unexpectedness. I dig it! However, if you’re into black find them here.  Nearby sits a cute pair of Le Specs  Jealous Games sunglasses and a really cute bag…oh did mention the bag already?

For added contrast I could have gone with these pieces too.

Lucky Finds

Thursday March 17, 2016

Today brought some little gems my way. I ordered Tarte Cosmetics Tarteist Lip Paint and it arrived today! Also, after holding it in my closet for what seems like three weeks I finally debuted my Love Moschino (although now sold out) bag and new favorite lippie in Manbun. This will be a brief post filled with mostly photo content. So here goes….

The weather has been so finicky here on the West Coast, one day it’s cool and quite cloudy and then the next day super sunny and warm. I’m never really sure how to dress until 10 am…that being said layers are a girls best friend. On this particular day it was a super balmy 70 degrees so it was a perfect day to pull out my newly acquired Mossimo Cardigan from Target. It’s so affordable at $25 but the fine gauge knit makes it feel so luxurious! I paired it over a t shirt from a brand collaboration with fellow blogger team from  Who What Wear for Target. I just love this top, more-so because it fills my need for warm colors without taking me to boring town. I know spring is beckoning, so I feel like the floral motif plays right into that but since I wasn’t ready to give up my deep palette just yet the richness of color was essential; for me this feels just right.

Sun tested peeps with Anderson style Toy Shades (sold out almost everywhere but) here

Wearing  Tarte Manbun throughout the shoot. My James Jeans were the real focal point here. Along with my favorite and well worn (as you can tell)  Superga snake print sneakers -mine are sold out but these  Superga Metallic Snake Slip on  sneakers (and I may have to have them as well) are just as sweet! On wrist vintage Skagen watch (this one is nearly identical) and UP3 by Jawbone fitness tracker.

*Worth noting- if you love SUPERGA browse this link for steals on their Cotu classic in selected colors and sizes. While they last. Delias

Tarte Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Manbun (left) Limited Edition Be Charmed Eyelash Curler  (presently on sale) $12  and Cray-Cray (on right) both $20

I hope you all enjoyed my mini post! See you soon.

Nailed It

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

So, if you’ve read any of my past posts you’ve probably ascertained the fact that although my first love is to the neutral palette I still gravitate to pops of color, graphic prints and abstract patterns from time to time. Blending these color schemes in clothing is an everyday accomplishment met with no great amount of toil but adding personality to my nails, well that begs to differ, considerably. I find it an ever consistent hassle to manage the upkeep of even basic colors, so doing something dramatic like nail art seems like a step into the wild. And this coming from a former nail tech who used to perform nail art services for clients on a daily basis. Yes, some several years back I was a practicing nail technician in Chicago. I loved transforming the the simple nail color into something that more resembled a work of art or something that signified creativity, not just plain brush strokes of paint. Now as a busy mom of three, plain brush strokes seem fine.

But every now and again I revert back to the old me that needs a heightened sense of originality that can only be delivered with a dose of color and craft. My first thought was, well it will be easy if you just book an appointment with the best nail artist in town, costly but easy. But surprisingly I didn’t want it too easy and I had this overwhelming urge to fill the craving myself. So it was with a perceptiveness of adventure and exploration that I set out to attempt my hand at the skill I had voraciously put so much effort into so many years ago.

And then there were the burning questions. Did I still have what it takes? Was it like they say it is with riding a bike? Does what was learned and instilled in you just automatically come rushing back just like the initial exhilaration of wanting to get started? Well, I wouldn’t know until I had given it a shot. Here is what my curious nature and call for creative stimulation brought me.

I wanted to do something quick because lets face it with school projects, meetings to attend, errands to run and countless other family attentive duties I’m committed to  I had to think fast and on my feet…..and what do you know? Well….after some researching of nail art and trying to get some inspiration (to no avail I might add) I found myself on the page of another fellow blogger,  Ann Kim who goes by Andy Heart. I just love her sense of style and how she reflects it on her page. She keeps things simple, loves her neutrals with sudden bursts of color and texture ….hmmm sound familiar?  While I was perusing her site I stumbled on a photo of her incredible nail art courtesy of Unistella and available at Glow Recipe . Apparently the trend of virtual glass shards applied to nails has been going on for some time now….see how long I’ve been out of the game? In any case I made up my mind to try it immediately! I added some personal touches and these are my results.

First, a shout out to Glow Recipe  for their super cute handwritten ‘thank you’ card! In this day and age people still do this? I love it! This totally makes them stand out as a brand. Their website hosts a plethora of skincare products and trends from Korea and makes them easily accessible in one spot.

Handwritten Note from Glow Recipe

Nail art with UniStella 1

Phase I 1st application of Essie Off Tropic and Cocktails and Coconuts and UniStella nail appliques.

Phase II tools includes cuticle scissors and Starbucks.

Realizing that I was not going to get the expert results I desired without my professional tools I had to “dig” through my makeup kit and locate my cuticle scissors that I use for lash application and in this case precision strip tendering. Oh how I wish I’d remembered to invest in a pair of nail tweezers, they are of the utmost essence when doing nail art. My old ones have been lost for quite some time now. They would have given me even more accuracy when applying the UniStella glass nail stickers.

Phase III ended with meshing Cocktails and Coconuts alongside the solid green nail (see far left) and the addition of gold nail stripping here . A brush of Lily Pulitzer for Essie in Golden Nuggets (on the baby finger) was limited edition similar here  and finished off with Essie Gel Setter.

So all in all it was a success and I feel like with more preparation (read: more time, professional tools, excellent lighting, work space etc.) it would have been a major success. But I’m still pleased with my results and will probably do it again, soon. What kind of projects are you working on? Is there something you were particularly great at in the past and let go of when “life” got in the way that you’d love to revisit? I hope this post gets your gears turning to get back at it again or to try something new.

Wishing you Love and Luxury,

Festival Flair

Wednesday March 10,2016

Festival season 2016 is here and whether you opt for an indoor or outdoor venue it’s not just about the music. Half of the fun is getting dressed. More often than not a lot of effort goes into the preparation of your outfit. Designers are paying attention and creating more pieces suited to these occasions, no matter the feel. So if you’re pulled toward any genre be it rock, country, indie, pop or hip-hop/rap, there’s a way to express your individual personality and style preference. This season is seeing a huge burst of mixed prints and texture and fringe is having a major moment, accenting everything from boots to bags. The bohemian look is extremely popular with flowy tops and dresses, macramé sweaters, high waisted and flare jeans and tie up Grecian inspired sandals. Don’t forget the Flash Tattoos and Cult Gaia turbands and flowered crowns. I can envision this look at Coachella in Indio, CA (near the desert region not far from Palm Springs) or The Joshua Tree Music Festival also in California. Coincidentally this fest host’s both a Spring and Fall line up.

The new world look of hip hop and rap emulate more than just the baggy below the waist jeans and super thick rolled gold chains of yesteryear. These days, although staying true to it’s original culture this music’s fashion has a more tailored vibe than once before thanks to the influence of male artists like Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Andre 3000 and Common just to name a few. The female artists that elevate their game that come to mind are, Eve, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Iggy Azalea. Things to look for to liven up your hip/hop fashion experience would be high or low top sneakers in unique colors or patterns, jeans that go beyond the basic, cigarette pants in a lively color, form fitted dresses and anything with embellished chains or motifs. Be sure to rock some nail art too, and take cues from Rihanna on the length, go stiletto. Speaking of RiRi, I just ordered (albeit a little late) a pair of her Puma Fenty  kicks from her collaboration with the brand. They are already sold out at most retailers including PUMA and I bought the last pair from REVOLVE but I found Shiekh shoes still has a healthy inventory so if you like them shop soon. And if you’re from the other side of the pond gear up for some back- in- the- day hip/ hop as De La Soul headlines Electric Beach Festival in the UK. Meanwhile stateside, New Orleans, Louisiana is the locale for the annual Essence Music Festival with headliners Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey and Ciara. Get your fix of R&B and hip/hop with this star packed line up which runs from June 30- July 3, 2016.

Doing a rock inspired fest in the spring, opt for black leather skinny or coated jeans, stud accentuated jackets or accessories (think Valentino) and classic band t shirts never get old. Going into summer you’ll want to pair your tops with cut off denim shorts. My favorites are slightly bleached and frayed. Lollapalooza in Chicago immediately comes to mind. This particular fest was created and conceived by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell back in 1991.

Headed to a music festival with a country influence, then denim is a must-do as well as a comfy pair of Western styled boots. Soften the rough edges with some lightweight cotton or gauzy fabrics and even add some lace for a taste of southern charm. Turquoise jewelry adds the finishing touch. This one had me at Lady Antebellum, Country Summer  lands in Santa Rosa, Ca in June. Now if only I was a little closer. This one is a little more Nor Cal than I prefer but it would be an awesome adventure.

And I couldn’t end the post without a shout out to my favorite kind of music, the kind that really gets my heart pounding, electronica and dance. Downtown Miami plays host to Ultra Music Festival  which runs March 18-20 and at the time of this publishing is already 93% sold out! South Beach is the home of Winter Music Conference at the end of this month and especially Sunday 3/20 at the EPIC Hotel pool party which boasts my favorites, Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw and Julius Papp .

Almost anything goes here, use your creative insight and pull together looks that speak to your character and not just passing fashion drifts. Remember, trends are just an inspiration to give ideas, interpret them into your own personal style. If you’re in the mood for any of the above mentioned festivals or something I didn’t get to highlight I hope you have fun choosing what to wear. It shouldn’t be a chore but a glorious, enjoyable and entertaining experience just like the music.

The Beautylish Interview with Natasha Denona

So guess what I was doing today around 10 am PST? Listening in to a lively chat with renowned makeup artist Natasha Denona on a conference call sponsored by the beauty website Beautylish. That’s what! Although I wasn’t personally able to speak with Natasha, I listened in as she shared her vision of beauty and makeup application, her personal philosophy on the cosmetics business and how she created and launched her own makeup line (available here NatashaDenona and  Beautylish ). On the call listeners were privy to have their pre-screened questions asked in-call by the two Beautylish moderators. My question pertained to her struggle or fear that she had to overcome when starting her own line. Her response?  “In the beginning you’re very skeptical as to whether you can do something. I was very determined. I was pushing myself into something I really wanted to do.”

Words spoken by someone who had a plan and executed it.

Denona originally hails from Croatia but was raised in Aachen, Germany and started her career early on in her teens as a model. As she transitioned out of modeling she began working behind the scenes as a makeup artist, gaining notoriety at the top fashion week shows and providing support on magazine fashion shoots, landing several covers. She grew a following and popularity based on her technique for creating skin that seemed to glow from within. This, (she says) she credits from working with the “everyday woman”, the mom, the working woman, the bride, by consistently complementing a natural look it translates to freshness on film. She learned a lot about the beauty business from experience working in the field and later in 2002 started The Natsaha Denona Academy in Germany. One thing led to the next and several years later with some coaxing from her husband she decided it was time to start a cosmetics line of her own. Like many individual start ups, she too was inspired by (in her opinion), the lack of quality products in circulation. In her words, “My push was making products that weren’t already on the market.”

Seeking to find a product that performed exactly to her expectations she spent six years in development and finally three years ago was ready to present her first installment of eye shadows. A lot has transpired since then and now she has a product line up that includes a host of  items including foundation, primer, cheek colour, lip palettes, glosses and many other indispensable beauty must-haves.

After hearing from this incredible artist I have an even more inept feel and understanding of Natasha Denona’s practice and her passion for the art of makeup. I cant wait to try her Face Glow Foundation which I have heard the most amazing reviews about. And I’m sure with more perusing I’ll find there are many more things I just cant live without.

Thanks to Beautylish for an Aaaaamazing conference call!

Wishing you Love and Luxury,

Skin Chic

Linda for Love and Luxury 4

If there’s one thing I know after working the ranks of Estee Lauder and Prescriptives for almost seven years combined, it would be how to treat your skin. Giving respect to the largest organ our bodies possess should not be a gracious extraordinary gesture saved for special occasions but instead should be a routine purpose conducted on an everyday basis. Obviously, the basics include a healthy diet, little inclusion of sugar and water consumed by the gallons. Secondly, is the outward care of the surface skin, a daily healthy cleansing practice (preferably morning and night) and a moisturizer. And if you really want to perfect your at home regime try enlisting the aid of a weekly mask (to help with moisture, firming or hinder oiliness) or an exfoliating scrub to assist with troubled skin that just seems to have lost it’s glow might be an alternative you’ll want to add into your system.

If you haven’t already begun a program that’s showing you results, fear not because it’s never really too late. Although the sooner the better, you can still prolong the signs of aging with a solid skin care system in place later in life (provided you’re using products targeted for your particular issues) and premier brands don’t hurt. I started using an anti- aging moisturizer in my early twenties. Even with my warm skin tone I still knew early on the benefits of sun protection and a good night cream. All I have to say is that right up to my late thirties I was still being carded at nightclubs. Just sayin’. I just turned fifty last November and I think I look pretty darn good.

Here are some of my favorite picks for great skin all season long. Don’t be afraid to splurge a little here, as with food choices (things going into your body) you only get one skin so treat it right. For some, spending a fortune on skincare is more than a luxury it’s an absolute necessity.Cost aside, whatever you decide, the most important step is getting started, or if you just need to tweak your existing plan add in a product or adjust a step as you see fit.

Here’s to your great skin!

Wishing you Love and Luxury,

Basic Skin

Try Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Wash for morning and night cleansing. To remove a day’s worth of makeup, including stubborn waterproof mascara I love MAC Cleansing Wipes . Keep these next to your bed at night. A great simple daily moisturizer that doubles as sunscreen is this one by Aveeno Positively Radiant . Essentially a great basic eye cream with SPF is this one Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector and for night and day enlist Lancome Renergie Eye Anti-Wrinkle and Firming Eye Cream to arrest fine lines and premature wrinkles.

Troubled Skin

For problem skin at any age it can seem like your fighting a never ending battle. Help combat the struggle with these tools.Try Perricone MD Citrus Facial Wash to aid with clearing oil without stripping or Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash it cleanses with the benefit of resurfacing and adding moisture. Add hydration with Natura Bisse Oxygen Cream. When breakouts appear treat them on the spot with this at night Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment or in a rush/touch ups throughout the day, Cover FX Blemish Treatment Concealer .

Sensitive Skin

Start with one of my favorites Fresh Soy Face Cleanser . This soap free soy infused cleanser is gentle enough for sensitive skin but still effective at removing impurities. Proceed with your moisturizer like this one Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream . You’ll want to keep your plan simple so limit your steps to just a few. In any case, every skin demands a sunscreen so keep yours protected with this gentle one from Shiseido Urban Environment Oil Free UV Protector .

Dry Skin

No matter what climate you live in if you’re a sufferer of dry, parched and thirsty skin then you know the dire importance of excellent skincare. So to support its needs an ample moisture therapy is clearly the protocol for relief. Start with a cleanser that adds extra moisture and hydration like this one Tatcha Pure One Step Camelia Cleansing Oil then add in an extra step like Josie Maran Pure Argan Milk Intensive Hydrating Treatment  followed by this tried and true classic from Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream . Make sure your eye cream hold its weight and performs like it should. To be sure try this one on for size Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Advanced Repair Retinol Eye Cream .

Mature Skin

By now we know the rules have changed and time is definitely running out on the clock. Slow the sands of time down with a program geared to restore, replenish and regenerate your youth. What I’m currently using is the Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Wash featured above which gets a boost from this gizmo Clarisonic Mia 2 . I switch up between Natura Bisse C+C Vitamin Cream and Perricone MD Photo Plasma depending on how much sun exposure I think I’ll be allotted. And while there is no substitute for a full eight hours of sleep I use a under eye cream as well, even during the day. This one suits me Eye Duty Triple Eye Remedy . I received a sample of this a while back and had to purchase the full size. At night I break out the heavy artillery reverting to the MAC face wipes as a first rite before my cleansing ritual. I use a heavier night-time moisturizer, Estee Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Creme is my go-to along with it’s partner Estee Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti Aging Eye Balm . And of course no night time regime is ideal without this inclusion Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair . For a weekly “spa-like feel” I treat my skin to the pleasure of Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment along with a new one that I just ordered Natura Bisse Essential Shock Intense Mask sure to be a keeper.

Dark Spots

Every now and again a pesky blemish turns into the spot that wont leave! What to do? Anything with Retinol, licorice root or Vitamin C is a sure fire hit. Work these into your lineup from time to time. Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair may look small packaged but the duo packs a powerful punch, formulated with Vitamin A (Retinol) this helps speed up cell turnover; revealing brighter skin over time. Try Murad Post Acne Spot Lightning Gel with hydroquinone; a tried and true component that dermatologists have suggested to combat hyper-pigmentation for years. At night give your skin a drink with this Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins Mineral Enriched Renewal Cream , part of the Estee’ Lauder family this dose of vitamins E, C and H help replenish, restore and retexturize skin overnight. And part of my very own “special needs” team is this one,  Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation which contains Vitamin C, Licorice root and pea extract for a triple threat.

What works for me now…..Linda skincare

And what I’m currently lusting for…..

Bring On the Whimsy

March 2, 2016

Whether you call it the statement bag or the embellished bag, just don’t call it boring! The spring 2016 season’s new “it” bag consists of a broad swept personality that is anything but mundane. With a range of everything from Dolce and Gabanna’s flower embroidered theme to the Lego inspired motif that is the subject of Le Petits Joueurs’  Alex Mini Geometry Crossbody Bag, vibrancy and imaginative intention are the key in this instance. Although black will always remain a pure staple, allowing for some color and a whimsical treat with these intricately sculpted bags are a playful and delightful deterrent from the norm.

As a virtually conceived wearable form of art, these bags and their small leather counterparts compose an idea that form and function need not exist without beauty and charm.

Their message conveys a nod to nature and fanciful ladylike gestures with Gucci’s ribbon detail on the Sylvie Grosgrain Striped shoulder bag and artful floral and butterfly applique’s donned by the Dionysus Butterfly GG  Supreme Canvas Shoulder bag. And I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself attracted to a muted orange Karl Lagerfeld day shopper with a mini Karl Robot tag charm attached. I’m usually enticed by the more neutral color scheme of black, cream, putty or slate grey. But there was actually an instant gravity pull towards the likes of this bag. I was beside myself for all of thirty seconds before deciding it would be my spring/summer bag. My clothing mostly consists of the neutral palette so this will be that extra pop of color needed to feel refreshed and alive.  Here are a few of the new digs on the block. With a varietal aspect of shapes, themes and price points there’s bound to be one that tugs at your heartstrings. Snatch one up if you dare.Wishing you Love and Luxury!

Love and Luxury

Love and Luxury

The New Order of Luxury

Anyone who says they can’t be bought is lying. There I said it. Anyone who says that money can’t buy you happiness or that things can’t bring you joy has obviously never been face to face with a Hermes Birkin or the likes of an Infiniti QX80. More to the point they probably never experienced one either, never mind, “if you break you bought it” how about “if you touch one you’ll want to own one”. Okay, I made that up but why do you suppose they invented the test drive? If either of those former statements held any truth whatsoever our economy would dwindle down to a mere trifling of its present existence. But that’s beside the point; shopping is just plain fun.

Spending your own money sends a wave of exhilaration through your body that could be compared to the gust of a Chicago wind on a chilly day in the mid of November. Yes, it’s pretty strong and believe me, I know. I’m a Chicago girl; born and raised. But still it’s more than that, owning and obtaining treasures in ones owns life or at least things that you consider a treasure can be uplifting. And they don’t necessarily have to be acquired through monetary means; perhaps gifts given hold a special sentimental quality that clings to you incessantly. And here’s the other thing, why pay a fortune just to own said treasures?   No one ever said procuring your finds had to put undue stress on the piggy bank, unless of course you come from an unlimited source of wealth and then in that case, have at it, by all means. Here are a few noteworthy items I’m seriously crushing over lately and some of the assets I found this month that I decided I just couldn’t live without. Tell me what you think.

With Winter still looming, even here on the West Coast it’s not exactly summer just yet, these glossy brown booties still have time to shine. I haven’t pulled the trigger on these babies yet but my finger is awful itchy. I’m picturing these with a white flowy cotton skirt and a chambray shirt or a basic t shirt and jeans, so easy.

Blaze Bootie Freebird by Steven

There’s no question that the platform heel, wedge or otherwise has been a fashion favorite for some time now and I don’t see that trend (if we can still call it one) changing any time soon. These will definitely fit the bill for spring into summer. Cant wait.

Marion Braided Strap Platform Sandal by Shutz

And this set of stackable rings by Cast of Vices  is the absolute finishing touch. Subtle and understated yet the knot detail makes just enough of an impact to not impart the yawn effect. Love! Find these at revolveclothing

Cast of Vices Set of 3 Stackable Rings in Gold

Lastly, my personal picks that made the cut. Who could say no to a BBS (basic black satchel),every woman’s staple; a standard calling card. This Love Moschino bag had my heart at first glance. This one is just basic enough to withstand being overtly trendy but still fashion forward and fun. I just ordered it so I’ll post pics when it arrives.

Lust doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this perfect pair of Celine Tilda sunnies. They are in every aspect of the word; perfection. I received these for Valentine’s Day from my husband and I was absolutely thrilled! No, you don’t always have to get jewelry for every occasion. I’ll be rockin’ these like a boss!

These Valentino shades found their way into my shopping cart on a whim while scoping out another score. Sometimes things just fall right into your path. When it’s meant to be it’s meant to be. I actually have them in tortoise but these are the same style in black. I may have to have these as well….hmmmm.

Let me know what you like in the comments below or what you’re having trouble finding and I’ll do my best to hunt it down. Wishing you Love and Luxury.
