Scent of Influence: Diana Vreeland

Fragrances fill the senses with the mysterious- Diana Vreeland

When you think of the inspiration behind a scent you most often imagine the subject’s personality and qualities and wonder how that spirit will translate into the fragrance itself. You may picture the background and guesswork that goes into creating an essence must be a pretty detailed and complicated process. It is. It used to take a fragrance house several years to create the perfect blend of aromas. These days the process is more like months to a year or so, but even still with the current influx of brands on the shelves creators are still cautious to spend as much time putting in the ample effort and patience into their scents arrival before delivering them to the masses.

Here is one scent with a true inspirational background that definitely took it’s time to get it right, named for Diana Vreeland, who started her prestigious fashion career as a columnist at Harper’s Bazaar from 1936-1962 and later became the influential Vogue Magazine Fashion Editor-in-Chief from 1963-1971. Fragrance was a very important factor in Ms. Vreeland’s life as she believed it imparted one’s signature and conjured a mysterious quality about a person. Each signature scent tells a different story, animating images and attitude through our olfactory senses. Which scent would best emulate your style?

Diana Vreeland Perfectly Marvelous

Perfectly Marvelous is described as a musk that evokes fire. The fragrance designer, Celine Barel was inspired by Ms. Vreeland’s quote, “If it isn’t a passion, it isn’t burning, it isn’t on fire, you haven’t lived!”

Extravagance Russe

Extravagance Russe  is a sensual Oriental with hints of amber and vanilla. It was created in remembrance of  Ms. Vreeland’s love of Orientalism.

Vivaciously Bold

Vivaciously Bold  Grapefruit, Lemon and Bergamot intermix before revealing the core of Jasmine and Petitgrain. This vivacious citrus is the true embodiment of the extraordinary woman that Ms. Vreeland was.

Here are just a sampling of three of the eight fragrances in the entire collection.  I picked out the ones that I felt I would most be attracted to based on my usual preferences.  I love spicy Orientals and musky scents. I’m also partial to some florals with hints of vanilla and the occasional citrus. They retail for $250 each. I would love to at least sample them sometime and I’ve decided to make a date to stop into Neiman Marcus sometime soon to do just that. If you have a inclination for a novelty that has a strong history of fashion inspiration and influence this this would be one venture I encourage you to at least inspect if not fully invest.
