Festival season 2016 is here and whether you opt for an indoor or outdoor venue it’s not just about the music. Half of the fun is getting dressed. More often than not a lot of effort goes into the preparation of your outfit. Designers are paying attention and creating more pieces suited to these occasions, no matter the feel. So if you’re pulled toward any genre be it rock, country, indie, pop or hip-hop/rap, there’s a way to express your individual personality and style preference. This season is seeing a huge burst of mixed prints and texture and fringe is having a major moment, accenting everything from boots to bags. The bohemian look is extremely popular with flowy tops and dresses, macramé sweaters, high waisted and flare jeans and tie up Grecian inspired sandals. Don’t forget the Flash Tattoos and Cult Gaia turbands and flowered crowns. I can envision this look at Coachella in Indio, CA (near the desert region not far from Palm Springs) or The Joshua Tree Music Festival also in California. Coincidentally this fest host’s both a Spring and Fall line up.
The new world look of hip hop and rap emulate more than just the baggy below the waist jeans and super thick rolled gold chains of yesteryear. These days, although staying true to it’s original culture this music’s fashion has a more tailored vibe than once before thanks to the influence of male artists like Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Andre 3000 and Common just to name a few. The female artists that elevate their game that come to mind are, Eve, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Iggy Azalea. Things to look for to liven up your hip/hop fashion experience would be high or low top sneakers in unique colors or patterns, jeans that go beyond the basic, cigarette pants in a lively color, form fitted dresses and anything with embellished chains or motifs. Be sure to rock some nail art too, and take cues from Rihanna on the length, go stiletto. Speaking of RiRi, I just ordered (albeit a little late) a pair of her Puma Fenty kicks from her collaboration with the brand. They are already sold out at most retailers including PUMA and I bought the last pair from REVOLVE but I found Shiekh shoes still has a healthy inventory so if you like them shop soon. And if you’re from the other side of the pond gear up for some back- in- the- day hip/ hop as De La Soul headlines Electric Beach Festival in the UK. Meanwhile stateside, New Orleans, Louisiana is the locale for the annual Essence Music Festival with headliners Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey and Ciara. Get your fix of R&B and hip/hop with this star packed line up which runs from June 30- July 3, 2016.
Doing a rock inspired fest in the spring, opt for black leather skinny or coated jeans, stud accentuated jackets or accessories (think Valentino) and classic band t shirts never get old. Going into summer you’ll want to pair your tops with cut off denim shorts. My favorites are slightly bleached and frayed. Lollapalooza in Chicago immediately comes to mind. This particular fest was created and conceived by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell back in 1991.
Headed to a music festival with a country influence, then denim is a must-do as well as a comfy pair of Western styled boots. Soften the rough edges with some lightweight cotton or gauzy fabrics and even add some lace for a taste of southern charm. Turquoise jewelry adds the finishing touch. This one had me at Lady Antebellum, Country Summer lands in Santa Rosa, Ca in June. Now if only I was a little closer. This one is a little more Nor Cal than I prefer but it would be an awesome adventure.
And I couldn’t end the post without a shout out to my favorite kind of music, the kind that really gets my heart pounding, electronica and dance. Downtown Miami plays host to Ultra Music Festival which runs March 18-20 and at the time of this publishing is already 93% sold out! South Beach is the home of Winter Music Conference at the end of this month and especially Sunday 3/20 at the EPIC Hotel pool party which boasts my favorites, Miguel Migs, Lisa Shaw and Julius Papp .
Almost anything goes here, use your creative insight and pull together looks that speak to your character and not just passing fashion drifts. Remember, trends are just an inspiration to give ideas, interpret them into your own personal style. If you’re in the mood for any of the above mentioned festivals or something I didn’t get to highlight I hope you have fun choosing what to wear. It shouldn’t be a chore but a glorious, enjoyable and entertaining experience just like the music.
Wishing you Love and Luxury,
Linda
